My ipods frozen. like it wont do anything it wont even turn off! Help!?

My year old just bought Super Mario Galaxy for his Wii and cannot even figure out how to get Mario to move.
Even when he is not touching the controller Mario runs in place but not forward or backward. How do you get him to move and turn in the different directions?
